Teacher Professional Development Workshops about Water Treatment and Stormwater in Pittsburgh

Hello Pittsburgh Parks friends!

We will be holding two immersive hands-on workshops for area educators or those wishing to learn more about water and stormwater this March, and invite you to share with your networks. We are very excited to offer these programs at low or no cost to educators involved in formal, in-school, or informal educational outreach in the community! We thought to reach out to you, as you have been a very appreciated partner and collaborator in sharing water and stormwater information with our community members.

OUR WORKSHOPS:

About the Water Treatment Learning Lab: March 13th

Join us for an immersive, hands-on workshop designed exclusively for educators at Pittsburgh Water’s Treatment Plant! This full-day experience will deepen your understanding of water science and infrastructure, and equip you with classroom-ready resources to bring the science of water treatment, our rivers and water quality to your students!

  • 🆓FREE to educators – no cost to attend!
  • ⌚Earn 5 ACT 48 hours
  • 🌮Lunch provided (taco bar with vegan options!)
  • 🎓Receive a educational standard-linked curriculum guide and STEM Activity Guide
  • 🧪Take-home resources to use with your students, docents, or community members!

Our Agenda:

  • 💦Guided Treatment Plant Tour – See water treatment in action!
  • 🗣️Expert Presentations – Discover the fascinating story of Pittsburgh’s Rivers and the history of water treatment, a special topic presentation about watershed-level water quality and Harmful Algal Blooms, and learn about Pittsburgh’s proactive work around removing lead pipes from the distribution system and preserving water quality.
  • 🔬Hands-on Mini-Workshop – Discover exciting hands-on lab-style activities about water treatment that you can take to the classroom and receive the classroom supplies to bring the lessons to life.

About the Stormwater Science and Green Infrastructure Learning Lab: March 20th

This hands-on session is designed for community members, educators, and sustainability enthusiasts who want to understand how green infrastructure helps manage stormwater, improve water quality, and create healthier neighborhoods.

What to Expect:

  • 🌟An all-star cast of community-based stormwater organizations: Allegheny Land Trust, Pennsylvania Resources Council, Penn State Master Watershed Stewards and Pittsburgh Water.
  • 💦A guided tour of Wightman Park, one of Pittsburgh’s largest Green Infrastruture projects
  • 🎓A discussion of Career possibilities in stormwater and sewer
  • ⌚Earn 5 ACT 48 hours
  • 🌮Lunch provided (with vegan options)
  • 🎓Receive an educational standard-linked curriculum guide and Activity Guide tied to MWEEs (Meaningful Watershed Educational Experiences)
  • 🧪$100 dollars worth of FREE take-home resources to use with your students, docents, or community members!

Whether you’re curious about rain gardens, permeable pavement, or the science behind stormwater management, this Learning Lab is your chance to explore innovative solutions shaping Pittsburgh’s future.
