Remake Learning is a professional network of educators and innovators working together to shape the future of teaching and learning in the Greater Pittsburgh Region. Representing more than 250 organizations, including early learning centers & schools, museums & libraries, afterschool programs & community nonprofits, colleges & universities, ed-tech startups & major employers, philanthropies & civic leaders, Remake Learning is collaborative effort to inspire and empower a generation of lifelong learners in Pittsburgh, West Virginia, and beyond.

Through innovative approaches to STEM, STEAM, Maker, and Digital learning, we’re working to provide all children and youth with new opportunities to develop relevant skills they’ll need to thrive in school, college, the workforce, and as citizens.

Mission & Vision

To guide the work of the Pittsburgh Remake Learning Network, The Sprout Fund led a process in 2011 to define a Mission statement describing the concept and purpose of the network, an aspirational Vision for the contribution Remake Learning will make to the greater Pittsburgh region over the next five years, Outcomes that will be collectively produced for the community over the long term, the Values & Guiding Principles that steward the network"s actions, and descriptions of the Audiences served by the network.

Remake Learning is a network of innovators and organizations empowering children and youth by creating relevant learning opportunities through the compelling use of technology, media, and the arts.

Vision

Pittsburgh is a living learning community- alive with creativity and opportunity!

It is a region that nurtures and celebrates creative thinking, curiosity, and exploration in all children. By combining Digital Media and Learning (DML) and the ethos of the DIY "maker culture" Pittsburgh has developed a 21st century model of creativity, collaboration, and community. Through the creative use of technology, media, and the arts, we delight, enrich, and inspire children and youth to play, learn, and grow in the digital age.

In the next five years, the Remake Learning Network will continue to draw on the greater Pittsburgh region"s innovators, organizations, and artists to become a community where children, parents, and teachers can easily access remarkable experiences and high-quality products that foster creative learning and play- both in and out of school.

In Pittsburgh, a nationally recognized model for learning encourages children of all ages to discover their passions and invent their brightest future. Through projects and activities, Remake Learning develops innovative opportunities to empower youth and magnify their intuitive abilities to examine, question, create, and reshape the world.

Outcomes

Remake Learning is transforming the learning landscape in Pittsburgh and positioning the region as a national leader in subjects relating to creativity and innovation in the lives of children and youth. Over time, the impact of our work will result in two lasting long-term outcomes:

Target Audiences

The success and lasting impact of Remake Learning depends on the participation, engagement, and cooperation of two distinct audiences: (1) children, youth, and families and (2) the people, projects, and organizations that are our region"s learning innovators.

Children, youth and families include kids and adolescents aged 18 and younger, as well as their families and caregivers. Remake Learning strives to be open and accessible to all children and youth in the Pittsburgh region.

The Remake Learning Network includes educators, technologists, media producers, researchers, grantmakers, entrepreneurs, cultural leaders, and other youth-minded professions, in addition to active parents and, importantly, the children themselves. The network is open to all who strive to make Pittsburgh the "best place on Earth to be a kid."

Each side is equally important; one group cannot make sustainable gains without the other. Leading network intermediaries serve to increase the collaboration between and effectiveness of the many individuals and organizations working to better the lives of children and youth though innovative learning practices.

The Remake Learning Learning Innovation Ecosystem

If we think of an ecosystem as an interconnected community of independent organisms who interact within a given environment and form a self-supporting system, then Remake Learning could perhaps be described as the learning innovation ecosystem of the Pittsburgh region.

Just like in an ecological system, no one organism (or in our case organization) possesses all of the elements necessary to sustain itself or the environment. It's only through the combined properties of individual system components working together in concert that life and growth (or in our case learning and creativity) can be sustained.

Already in Pittsburgh, educators and leaders working in formal and informal settings are responding to important social and technological shifts that are changing the context for learning in the 21st century. They are making use of new tools and resources, as well as capitalizing on the emergent interests and fluencies possessed by today"s generation of young digital natives, to transform Pittsburgh into a model for collaborative, creative, and connected learning.

We've come to understand this organic tendency as part of a model that resembles an ecosystem, composed of five key elements:

Formal & Informal Learning Environments

In the Pittsburgh region, schools are open and receptive to new ideas and teachers are eager to apply new learning strategies in their classrooms. Outside of schools, regional institutions actively seek out and implement innovative programming to enhance and extend opportunities for life-long learning.

Innovation Research & Development

Pittsburgh is home to a remarkable cadre of scientists, inventors, and educators working at the leading edge of innovation. In particular, Carnegie Mellon University is a nexus for research and innovation across a variety of applicable fields.

Learning Research & Advocacy

Research centers at regional higher education institutions are exploring the science of learning, developing new metrics to evaluate learning outcomes in and out of the classroom, and designing new tools, methods, and systems for educators and learners alike.

Commercial & Entrepreneurial Interest

Entrepreneurial startups and university spinouts bring educational technology innovations to market with the help of a supportive network lead by our partners at the Pittsburgh Technology Council as well as regional incubators and accelerators.

Strategic Stewardship

While Remake Learning began as an informal movement, it has rapidly developed to reflect a shared vision among the region's leading civic, commercial, cultural, and academic stakeholders. Alongside the leadership of the regional philanthropic community, The Sprout Fund serves as the strategic steward advancing the work of Remake Learning.

In 2007 The Grable Foundation convened an interdisciplinary working group of thought leaders and field practitioners to explore how new media and communications technology could make a positive impact on the ways children live, learn, and play.

First adopting the name Kids+Creativity, this informal network began meeting regularly, exchanging ideas, and collaborating on new initiatives that actively engage academics, artists, librarians, educators, technologists, and parents in the development of a new model for learning innovation in the greater Pittsburgh region.

After several years of successful pilot projects and growing interest, The Sprout Fund began to provide strategic stewardship for the network in 2011 in an effort to formalize the network and create a sustainable support structure to enhance the individual and collective capacities of all network members.

Recently renamed the Remake Learning Network, the network has connected Pittsburgh with the growing global movement to reimagine and remake learning. In 2012, Pittsburgh became the third Hive Learning Network in North America after New York and Chicago. In summer 2014, Pittsburgh joined other Cities of Learning from across the country in a groundbreaking initiative to leverage community resources to ensure learning doesn’t stop when school lets out.

Recognizing the need to sustain the momentum now underway, Pittsburgh’s leaders have come together as The Remake Learning Council to advance learning innovation. The Council brings together executives in business, higher education, public education, civic organizations, foundations, and government to strategically support efforts to reimagine and remake learning across the Pittsburgh region's schools, museums, libraries, and community centers. With a focus on advancing maker, digital, and STEAM learning, the Council works to help learning innovators provide all of Pittsburgh’s children and youth the best available opportunities to learn and be creative

With millions of dollars invested, thousands of children engaged, and hundreds of practitioners leading dozens of projects, Remake Learning continues to evolve as new members bring new ideas and new energy to carry the movement forward.
