AI Literacy in Southwestern Pennsylvania
Artificial intelligence is rapidly becoming part of how we live, work, create, communicate, teach, and learn. As the technology becomes more capable and commonplace, educators and studnets need opportunities not simply to use AI, but to understand what it is, how it works, where it shows up, and what it means for their lives and the world around them.
In 2026, Remake Learning partnered with Quill to launch a collaborative exploration of what AI literacy might look like in practice and what students will need to thrive alongside AI. Bringing together educators, researchers, technologists, and industry leaders from across the Pittsburgh region, the initiative connects the region’s deep expertise in artificial intelligence and robotics with its longstanding culture of educational innovation and cross-sector collaboration.
The initiative is helping develop a shared understanding of AI literacy grounded in knowledge, critical thinking, ethical reasoning, and other human capacities that are becoming increasingly important in a world shaped by AI. Along the way, the initiative is identifying high-quality resources for educators, piloting approaches in local classrooms, and generating insights that can help schools and communities in Southwestern Pennsylvania and beyond thoughtfully navigate AI’s implications for teaching and learning.
The Initiative at a Glance
Research & Industry Roundtables
In spring 2026, AI researchers, technologists, industry leaders, and other experts came together to explore emerging developments in artificial intelligence, the opportunities and tensions they create, and the knowledge and human capacities likely to become more important as AI evolves.
Educator Workshops
In summer 2026, CodeJoy facilitated a week of collaborative learning and exploration with sixteen teachers and instructional leaders from across Southwestern Pennsylvania. Educators developed a shared understanding of AI literacy, connected perspectives from research and industry to the realities of schools and classrooms, and evaluated more than 130 resources for teaching and learning about AI.
Classroom Pilots
Throughout the 2026-2027 school year, teachers and students at participating schools are putting selected AI literacy resources into practice. Their experiences will generate new insights about what meaningful, developmentally appropriate AI literacy can look like in real classrooms and help inform future teaching, learning, and resource development.
Explore the Work
The AI Literacy Resource Hub features more than 90 free resources to help educators explore what students need to understand about AI and find practical ways to bring that learning into the classroom.
The collection includes lessons, activities, guides, and other resources from trusted education providers, searchable by grade level, subject area, AI literacy topic, and resource type.
More is coming soon. Additional outputs from the initiative will include videos exploring AI literacy and Pittsburgh’s role in shaping its future, publications sharing perspectives and emerging ideas from the work, and findings from the 2026–27 in-school pilots.
This initiative is led in partnership by Quill and Remake Learning.

This initiative is supported by a grant from the Richard King Mellon Foundation.
