In Pittsburgh, some numbers are extra special.
There’s 143, Fred Rogers’ shorthand for “I love you.” There’s 412, the area code that connects us to home. There’s 90 (the number of neighborhoods), 446 (the number of bridges), and 3 (the number of rivers).
And then there’s 57.
To celebrate nearly two decades of Remake Learning, we’ve gathered 57 learning innovations that have helped shape Pittsburgh’s learning landscape. Together, they make up The 57: Remaking Learning in Pittsburgh and Beyond, a new collection of stories about what can happen when people rethink where, when, how, and why learning happens.
And these stories come in all varieties.
Some of the projects featured in The 57 were one-time experiments. Others became lasting programs, places, and institutions. They took root in classrooms, libraries, museums, maker spaces, parks, community centers, and plenty of places that resist easy categorization. They include TV shows and toys, weather balloons and video games, hands-on science and digital media, opportunities to make, play, explore, connect, and create.
Each profile looks beyond what happened to consider how people made it happen, what they learned along the way, and how others might borrow or adapt the idea. Learning Keywords accompanying each story also highlight the experiences, skills, dispositions, and opportunities these projects have cultivated—from curiosity and creativity to confidence, collaboration, technical literacy, and joy.
Of course, 57 is only a small sample. Behind these stories are thousands of educators, artists, librarians, technologists, students, families, and communities who have spent the past two decades remaking learning across the region. No collection could capture all of that work. But taken together, these 57 stories offer a glimpse of its remarkable variety—and perhaps a little inspiration for what could come next.
