Arts & Bots emerged from the CREATE Lab at Carnegie Mellon in 2006 as design workshops to engage middle school girls in robotics and engineering. The program has evolved to include both girls and boys at elementary, middle, and high schools in western Pennsylvania. In classes ranging from history to chemistry, students use Hummingbird kits and the CREATE Lab’s Visual Programmer to craft robots out of cardboard and art supplies, motors and sensors, and program them to tell stories and express emotions.
