Allentown Learning & Engagement Center

Allentown Learning & Engagement Center, or ALEC, is located in South Pittsburgh in the neighborhood of Allentown. ALEC serves as a base for the Brashear Association’s Education Department and serves South Pittsburgh youth in afterschool programming, summer camps and weekend programming as well as various community resource offerings and events for the whole family.

ALEC out of school time hours offer South Pittsburgh youth with a safe and positive environment for homework assistance and everything from STEAM programming to environmental studies to healthy eating initiatives and much more.  Allentown Learning and Engagement Center offers two classrooms with books, games and education tools geared towards students in grades 2-8. A small demo kitchen offers hands on lessons with food, some of which comes directly from the garden planted and cared for by the students and staff. An adjoining outdoor space allows for games, messy science experiments and gardening in the raised garden beds.  Allentown Learning and Engagement Center conducts adult computer hours during the weekdays and acts as community resource and an extension of The Brashear Association’s community service offerings.

The Brashear Association’s Allentown Learning and Engagement Center is proud to partner with such organizations as The Birmingham Foundation, The Grable Foundation, Eat n’ Park, the Hilltop YMCA, Venture Outdoors, Strong Women Strong Girls, A Giving Heart, the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh and many other community organizations.  The Brashear Association works alongside Phillips, Arlington and Grandview Elementary Schools as a PPS partner, APOST Quality Campaign Member and Fit United Partner.
