Melissa Butler is a writer and educator. She is a consultant and founder of reimagining project, LLC. She collaborates with others on various learning projects and research in support of learning for students, educators and systems. She continues to direct Children’s Innovation Project.
Her writing and consulting include a focus on: slow noticing; perspective-taking based in not-knowing; intrinsically motivated curiosity; interdisciplinary learning; play as method; inquiry grown from student exploration + educator noticing/nudging; teacher learning grown from trust and autonomy; building of teacher-led leadership; descriptive conversation protocols; system change through noticing to leverage what’s already there.
Melissa taught for 23 years in urban public schools, most recently in Pittsburgh Public Schools as a Kindergarten teacher.
She has a Masters Degree in Curriculum Theory from Penn State University and a Masters Degree in Creative Writing from the University of Cape Town. She’s National Board Certified as an Early Childhood Generalist and a Teacher Consultant with Western PA Writing Project/National Writing Project.
