The Shack Neighborhood House is a rural community center located in the western end of Monongalia County, WV. The Shack’s mission is to provide an inclusive, safe, and fun environment for learning and recreation. Programs strengthen families by nurturing children, youth, and community members of all ages in Monongalia County and the surrounding areas. The Shack strives to create opportunities for children that may change the trajectory of their lives and shape the people they will become. The Shack works towards this goal by fostering personal growth and self-confidence while promoting social responsibilities.

Collaborative relationships are the best way to tackle community-wide needs. In this spirit, since 2008 the Shack has teamed up with the Monongalia County Family Resource Center (FRC) as their fiscal agent and partner. This partnership has increased reach in the community, particularly with children ages 0-3 and their families. It also means that alongside three full-time staff (a director, program coordinator, and financial officer) the Shack houses the FRC coordinator and an FRC AmeriCorps VISTA. Full-time staff are supported by several AmeriCorps members, part-time staff, and hundreds of volunteers. Together, the Shack and FRC serve an average of over 100 kids a day during the fall and winter months. During the summer months, the number jumps to well over 200 kids a day. In one year, the Shack serves a total of 20,000 children and families.
