For over four decades, the place that people throughout the region have discovered to create, experience, and celebrate the arts is Sewickley’s Sweetwater Center for the Arts. The center’s mission is simple: to enrich the lives of children and adults by providing excellence in arts education and cultural programming.
Sweetwater’s story began in 1975 when a group of friends and neighbors in Sewickley came together to open an arts center where they could study and create art together. That first community was small, operating in a single-family home with a pottery studio in a garage. Over the years, Sweetwater’s community has grown and has transformed to become a regional hub that offers more than 400 classes, six gallery exhibitions, 10 musical performances, and countless artist lectures, auctions, and experiences in the arts. Sweetwater also has a robust outreach program, further expanding the center’s community through partnerships with more than 10 organizations in three counties.
In the Digital Age, the definition of community is even broader, as there are more ways than ever for people to find the information and connections they want. Sweetwater continues to evolve to remain relevant with the changing attitudes and aspirations of the members of its expanded communities and to stay up-to-date in the latest trends and advancements in arts education, STEAM learning, and modern ways to create and experience art.
