Science Buddies Mentoring started out as just an idea, an idea to inspire children to pursue an interest in the ever-growing world of science by introducing engaging experiments and providing guidance via high school mentors. From there, co-founders and high school juniors Jack Terrell and Alex Wang worked to create a program at their own school where they could boost enthusiasm for science by hosting fun experiments and bringing in professionals to talk about their work.
After months of running the very well-received trial version of Science Buddies, they created a curriculum guidebook providing everything needed to replicate the same, successful experiences in any setting. From there, Science Buddies Mentoring has expanded to local schools and science education organizations, and is making efforts to expand further into the greater Western Pennsylvania area and beyond. Science Buddies Mentoring hopes to reach and inspire more children to love science.
Science Buddies Mentoring believes that every child should have equal opportunities to participate in science outside of their regular classrooms by engaging with high school mentors. Through after school and extracurricular programs designed and run by high school students, Science Buddies Mentoring endeavors to kindle excitement about science in younger students by running experiments with them, discussing the results, and introducing them to professionals in a variety of disciplines.
