Putting Down Roots encompasses both an urban microfarm in Pittsburgh and a variety of environmental education activities. Founder Maren Cooke – a planetary scientist by training and now an educator, activist, farmer, and builder – speaks on climate and sustainability and has taught physics, astronomy, environmental science, nature observation, organic gardening, permaculture, beekeeping, green building, and green living to people of all ages. She also maintains an online listing of regional environmental and social justice events and resources called MarensList, and organizes and hosts Sustainability Salons, a monthly environmental education forum and community gathering now eight years running. The urban microfarm supplies ultra-local, organic produce to a restaurant and a local food pantry, and garden plants to the surrounding community.
