The mission of Pittsburgh Public Theater is to provide artistically-diverse theatrical experiences of the highest quality. The Public also strives to serve, challenge, stimulate, and entertain while operating in a fiscally responsible manner. The Public shares its resources with the community through education and engagement initiatives intended for a wide range of people, with the goal of expanding and diversifying audiences while enriching the community.
As Western Pennsylvania’s flagship theater company, The Public offers a richly varied repertoire featuring new, meticulously-realized productions of masterworks of the international canon, musicals of exceptional merit, world premieres, American classics, cutting-edge contemporary works, and first-release plays of significant thematic value direct from Broadway and off-Broadway. The Public’s productions are created locally at its Point Breeze Scene Shop and then moved to the O’Reilly Theater in the downtown cultural district. The theater’s 6-play subscription series draws 80,000+ individuals for 225+ performances.
Complementing its programs on the stage, The Public offers a robust suite of Education and Engagement programs including the celebrated Shakespeare Monologue & Scene Contest, Open Stage Student Matinee Series, Creative Dramatics Residency Program, HOT TIX ($16.50 tickets for anyone 26 and under), and two annual Free City Performances for members of the community not traditionally served through other formats. The Public also provides inclusive theater-going experiences for patrons of all abilities offering open-captioning and audio-description as well as American Sign Language interpretation for all mainstage productions.
