Pittonkatonk’s mission is to empower people through music in diverse practices to engage the world around them and advance fair and just relations between people and society. Pittonkatonk focuses on community music making, youth performance opportunities, youth and adult education and workshops, and partnerships with like minded non-profit organizations.
As part of this work, Pittonkatonk Education Program (PEP!) provides musical instruction and cultural experiences for teens in underserved neighborhoods as well as performance opportunities around the Pittsburgh area.
Launched in 2014, PEP! features local and national performers that connect to youth through in-class performances, master classes, and cultural experiences. PEP! promotes creative expression that is not taught in the classroom and challenges students to think critically about music and culture, while exploring new forms of expression.
