Mars Area School District (MASD) is a K-12 school district in Mars, Pennsylvania.
MASD is continually building capacity K-12 for STEAM programming and innovative practices. The district has an array of technology integration tools, including a 1:1 initiative at the 7-12 levels. Elementary Schools are equipped with iPad technology to enhance mobile learning opportunities for all students.
New to the district in 2017-2018 school year was the creation of the K-6 STEAM program. Three defined STEAM rooms were designed to emphasize computer science, coding and maker space learning environments. The program was blended into a 5 day rotation where students would attend this class as part of their “specials” rotation. Three teachers are dedicated to teaching the STEAM class and facilitating the exploration, creation and design aspect of the 36-day course.
Each grade level focuses on various types of inquisitive learners that will continually build and grow as they progress through their grade levels. The program is the foundation to MASD’s existing STEAM courses offered in Middle and High schools up to the AP level. Throughout the development of the K-6 STEAM program, MASD has focused on incorporating and aligning core curricular concepts to expand the application of learning in a more engaging and empowering format through student-led challenges and projects.
