Communitopia is working in partnership with Venture Outdoors in the development and implementation of the Climate Change Adventure Education Project, an exciting (and FREE!) Act 48 professional development opportunity for teachers in grades 7-12. Teachers participating in the project will experience climate change education in a local context by combining classroom learning with climate friendly adventure activities that focus on real-life science and field research. Participants will learn how to initiate climate action through meaningful STEM projects and will explore the causes and effects of climate change in fun and engaging ways, including:
- Researching water quality while kayaking
- Measuring soil and forest health during a hike
- Monitoring air quality while riding a bike
- Participating in citizen science projects
- Examining how land use affects ecosystems
As a benefit of participation, teachers will be invited to bring their students on a FREE (bus stipends included) Climate Change Adventure Field Trip provided by Venture Outdoors and Communitopia that utilizes one of the climate-friendly activities provided by the project—kayaking, biking, hiking—to take part in STEM activities during the 2023/2024 school year.
