This online graduate course addresses the importance of systematic, explicit, and sequential instruction in phonics, phonological awareness, vocabulary, spelling, and word study for children in grades K-3. Teachers will learn how to facilitate learning “in” and “out” of text to develop students as work solvers in both reading and writing.

During this course, grades K-3 teachers will expand their knowledge of the alphabetic principle and how words work. They will assess students’ reading and writing for phonics and spelling knowledge  in their classrooms. Additionally, teachers will gain an understanding of the essential elements of a word study curriculum.

Additionally teachers will expand their knowledge of how words work and learn how to support English language learners and students who have difficulty learning to read and write.
