Join the History Center’s educators to explore the Smithsonian’s Portraits of Pittsburgh: Works from the National Portrait Gallery exhibit and learn more about using portraiture to explore historic figures. Using portraits of figures such as Andrew Mellon, Jane Grey Swisshelm, Martha Graham, and August Wilson, we will examine changing beliefs about who is important in American culture and how such individuals impacted the world in which we live today. Teachers will leave with strategies for investigating portraits and classroom activities to encourage deeper thought about the representations of notable people.
