We invite you to join Matt’s Maker Challenge!
This fall, challenge your elementary school students to an exciting contest where they will make a unique contraption that completes a simple task using everyday items, teamwork, humor and their imaginations. Matt’s Maker Challenge is held in conjunction with the world premiere of Rube Goldberg™, The World of Hilarious Invention! Exhibit at the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh.
What Should Your Contraption DO?
Create a contraption that can creatively POP a balloon!
What is a Rube Goldberg Machine™?
A Rube Goldberg Machine™ is a crazy contraption which accomplishes a simple task in the most complicated – and funniest – way possible! It uses everyday items (mostly junk!) to tell a story and, most important of all, it makes you LAUGH.
Who Can Enter?
There are three categories for entry:
- Kindergarten – 1st grade
- 2nd – 3rd grades
- 4th – 5th grades
How Do You Enter?
First, register your class for Matt’s Maker Challenge here. When you register, you’ll receive the official rules, a Matt’s Maker Challenge balloon (we’ll send you extras – just in case!) and a link to submit a video of your machine in action.
After you complete your contraption, submit a video of it in action by October 5, 2018.
Classes who submit a valid video are invited to attend Matt’s Maker Challenge Day at Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh on October 12, 2018, where you can explore lots of crazy contraptions in our new exhibit: Rube Goldberg™, The World of Hilarious Invention! Exhibit.
Capacity for this day is limited and is on a first-registered basis. Classes who cannot attend on October 12 are eligible for a subsidized field trip to see the exhibit at a later date.
Did You Say a Prize?
Nine classes (3 for each grade category) will receive $2,000 to support making in their schools PLUS an invitation for each class and their families to Family Night at the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh on October 23, 2018, to celebrate with dinner and an award ceremony.
Registering to participate in Matt’s Maker Challenge does not sign you up for your visit to the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh. When we receive your valid video submission, you will receive instructions on how to make reservations for visiting on October 12, or, alternately, how to schedule a subsidized field trip to see the exhibit Rube Goldberg™, The World of Hilarious Invention at a later date.
