DESCRIPTION:SPARK Saturdays is a program created by ECE Outreach that aims to introduce middle and high school students to concepts within the field of electrical and computer engineering and expose them to engineering as a potential career choice. There are typically 4-5 labs\, held on Carnegie Mellon’s campus in Spring semester\, ranging from topics like the binary number system and boolean logic to programming in Python to building circuits with LEDs and that can be used as radios. \nOur program is free of charge and will be held in-person at CMU’s campus! \nThe labs assume no prior knowledge\, and students are provided with assistance from Carnegie Mellon graduate and undergraduate students.

SUMMARY:AI for Live Entertainment: Announcing\, Translation and Accessibility
DESCRIPTION:While AI is common in visual media today\, the world of Live Events can benefit from these tools in many ways\, ranging from maximizing accessibility with affordable & accurate automated captioning and text translations to reach larger audiences\, to the creation of synthetic and human-modeled voices to create content ranging from the very creative\, to the mundane but necessary (such as PA announcing). Introducing Generative AI into the equation further opens up opportunities to create content on the fly\, from data sources as disparate as time of day\, building automation data\, weather service data\, and much more. \nThis presentation will firstly show how AI is used to generate live on-site captions and translations from the spoken word and how they can be displayed. Then fun begins when we use Generative GPT AI to take limited presentation or content information and have it embellish it to build rich bodies of text to inform or entertain audiences\, especially when we convert that in real-time to synthetic AI-generated human voices of different genders and accents\, including human-like AI-generated characters\, which can creatively open up vast new areas of creative expression with just a few keystrokes\, or even from fully automated routines. \nAbout Bill Bennett:\nA media & entertainment technology veteran\, Bill currently manages new product innovations at ENCO Systems (including R&D\, POC’s\, design\, marketing\, documentation\, etc.)\, where he created award-winning products such as enTranslate Mobile for live captions & translations to handhelds\, the AIM platform for blending automated STT\, TTS & Generative AI voicing for messaging\, and ENCO’s Live Stage Captioning product and rental category. He also manages ENCO’s offering of Qimera\, an Unreal Engine-based Virtual Production system. \nHe has managed venue technical deployments & operations for seven Olympics for worldwide host Olympic Broadcasting Services. His prior freelance engineering experience spans many professional sports leagues and worldwide events\, and he’s owned his own profitable laser show production company. Currently a Board Member of the Association of Public Radio Engineers (APRE)\, he’s immediate past chair of the SMPTE Pittsburgh Section\, former SBE Pittsburgh secretary\, and served on the Technical and Ethics Committee of the International Laser Display Association (ILDA). DESCRIPTION:ELIE Circle’s Holistic Health Framework is specifically designed for community-based educational spaces to support the holistic health of both young people and staff. The framework consists of describing holistic health\, barriers to holistic health\, and holistic health tools. This session is split into 5 sections. The first section is an introduction to the framework. The second section is focused on staff. The presenter will overview barriers to holistic health (oppression – adultism and staff’s stress/identity) and highlight holistic health tools (advocacy/activism – dismantling adultism\, connecting – intentionally building relationships\, and introspection). The third section is focused on stress and safety. The presenter will overview barriers to holistic health (stress/trauma) and highlight holistic health tools (connecting – perspective taking and facilitating safety). The fourth section is focused on oppression and liberation. The presenter will overview barriers to holistic health (oppression manifestations and inaccurate history) and highlight holistic health tools (advocacy/activism\, critical self-reflection\, connecting – affinity groups\, evaluating curriculum/activities\, and learning accurate history). SUMMARY:Spring 2026 Leadership through Design: Enhancing Student Growth & Achievement
DESCRIPTION:An impactful and engaging education system puts people first – students\, parents\, teachers\, community members. Human-Centered Design (HCD) provides the toolbox and mindset to ensure a system stays agile and responsive to current and future stakeholders. \nThis course will introduce school leaders to design thinking and\, more specifically\, Human-Centered Design. Design thinking encompasses five phases of design: empathize\, define\, ideate\, prototype\, and test. Throughout this course\, participants will learn about and apply each phase of the design cycle to a challenge within their school system that will foster student growth and achievement. \nHCD is a subset of design thinking that focuses on empathy as a means for collaborative problem solving. When school leaders know their students well\, the school systems better meet their needs. When leaders understand the challenges facing their communities\, they can adapt to their priorities. \nParticipants will work throughout the course to develop and implement a plan for addressing an area of need in their school system around student growth and achievement. \nThis course includes direct instruction\, individual and group activities\, independent assignments\, as well as job-embedded applications. Resources\, including explainer videos and design templates\, will be available. \nMeeting Dates and Times\nThis course is 100% virtual. Each meeting date will be a three-hour block with an hour of synchronous time\, an hour of asynchronous time\, and a final hour of synchronous time.\nThursday\, February 5\, 2026 – 9:00 am – 12:00 pm\nThursday\, February 26\, 2026 – 9:00 am – 12:00 pm\nThursday\, March 12\, 2026 – 9:00 am – 12:00 pm\nThursday\, March 26\, 2026 – 9:00 am – 12:00 pm\nThursday\, April 16\, 2026 – 9:00 am – 12:00 pm \nJob-embedded assignments will take place between sessions. These hours include 10 virtual synchronous hours; 4 asynchronous hours\, and 11 job-embedded hours of work. \nThe course is $375 per person with discounts available for district teams of three or more school leaders. \nCancellation Policy\nRegistrants must cancel two weeks prior to the start of the course in order to receive a full refund. Registrants who drop the course any time thereafter will not be eligible for a refund\, but will receive a course credit that can be used toward a future Act 45 course within the next 12 months. SUMMARY:Teaching Jewish Life and Antisemitism in the Classroom
DESCRIPTION:locaust and in Western PA\, and the history and dynamics of antisemitism.\nThis training will provide resources for educators to teach two key topics: Jewish life in Europe before the Holocaust and in Western PA\, and the history and dynamics of antisemitism. \nIn the morning we will learn from visiting Dr. Lauren Granite Centropa Archive\, which interviewed over 1\,000 European Jews between 2000-2019 about their memories of the 20th century. You’ll experience a lesson about the diversity of European Jews and leave with materials to teach it in your classroom. \nIn the afternoon we will provide practical resources that will help you teach the complex topic of antisemitism to students. In his academic research at the University of Texas at Austin\, he examines the causes of and solutions to adolescent behaviors\, such as motivation\, stress\, mental health and academic achievement. Over the last decade\, he has been one of the top 0.1% most-cited psychologists in the world.  \nThis event is part of the University Lecture Series and is free and open to the public.
