Enhancing Early Childhood Science & Math:
Developmentally Appropriate Introductions & Explorations
• Would you like innovative ideas for strengthening your center’s science and math emphasis at the preschool and kindergarten level?
• Do you want to expand your comfort level with science and math topics so you can better interest and engage young children?
Light & Color: Exploring Properties and Principles
Thursday Morning (Maggie Rosenblum, Krissy Opferman & Artist Amanda Long)
Designed to demonstrate strategies for guiding young children to explore the fundamental concepts of light & color via a thematic study with both white light and black light explorations. NOTE: Participants will have an opportunity to borrow a traveling, interactive White Light exhibit funded by a Spark Award.
Meaningful Math: Numbers, Shapes, Patterns, Measurements & Data
Thursday Afternoon (Linda Hancock & Sharon Carver)
Designed to help educators intentionally integrate all five mathematics content areas in meaningful ways throughout the day.
Building: Beyond the Basics for Young Children
Friday Morning (Jean Bird)
Designed to encourage educators to explore building more deeply by learning about our whole school building unit and engaging in hands-on construction and woodworking activities.
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle: Introducing Young Children to Environmental Responsibility
Friday Afternoon (Maggie Rosenblum & Jean Bird)
Designed to share ideas for engaging young children in a thematic study that can lead to long term “green practices”, such as recycling, composting, etc., at school and home.
Presentations will involve photos, demonstrations, discussion, and exploration of materials designed for preschool and kindergarten programs. Brainstorm science & math enhancements with colleagues from a range of programs, consider varied approaches to involving families, learn about available community resources for schools, and plan specific improvements for your own center.
