Sharing books, promoting literacy, engaging the community

Propelled to Read is a service project created by a group of 10th grade students in their independent studies class at Propel Braddock Hills High School. Their mission is to encourage literacy in the community by placing books at  easily accessible locations such as bus stops and grocery stores.

The class collected over 1,300 books for the project from other members of the school. They cleaned and painted newspaper dispensers donated by the Pittsburgh Post Gazette and filled them with the donated books to create miniature libraries. Placed at various locations throughout Braddock Hills, the miniature libraries run on the honor system, offering books to people who might not otherwise access them. The books are all organized in an online, searchable catalog.
