Building imaginary cities to teach real-world skills

The East Allegheny School District’s iCATS Mobile Lab utilizes an interactive, web-based platform and mentoring from transportation manufacturer Bombardier to teach students real-world problem solving skills through an imaginative, year-long project. Through utilizing an online portal and STEAM concepts in conjunction with classroom lessons and mentoring from Bombardier engineers, students spend an entire school year constructing virtual cities, creating everything from infrastructure to transportation, and learning about practical concepts such as zoning, energy use and environmental impact. Teaching students real-world problem solving techniques using real-world situations better prepares them to think critically and make informed decisions based on awareness of their environments.
