This event is the culminating presentation of youth ideas and visions shared under the #PghYouthVision platform, which is supported in part by a 100 Days of US award from The Sprout Fund.
#PGHYouthVision is a media campaign to share Pittsburgh youth’s perspectives and visions on the future of our city, region, and country. This project, supported by regional youth organizations and programs, will use creative media to drive civic engagement among youth, amplify the voices of young people, facilitate intergenerational grassroots organizing, and help shape policy. Pittsburgh area youth-serving organizations are invited to participate by engaging the media campaign hashtag #PGHYouthVision with their students during regularly scheduled out-of-school time program hours. The media created from this campaign can include written, visual or performative works addressing issues of justice and capturing the ideas of the students for a public audience. Sample themes or categories that may be addressed include: Racial Justice, Environmental Justice, Immigration & Refugees, Labor & Jobs, Education, LGBTQIA+ Justice, Food Justice & Security, Homelessness & Affordable Housing, Transportation, Policing & Incarceration, Public Health.
The culminating town hall meeting and visual presentation for #PGHYouthVision is on April 27, 2017 at the Kelly Strayhorn Theater from 4:30 PM – 7:00 PM. The lobby will host a reception and visual display of youth projects and the town hall will last for about 1 hour beginning at 5:30 PM in the theater. The town hall will consist of a panel of youth panelists & moderators, and an audience of parents, families, administrators, teachers, grassroots organizers, city planners, policy makers and reporters. The audience will leave with a physical handout of data and information collected from youth participants. The platform this town hall will provide includes intergenerational and cross-industry networking, as well as an introduction to civic engagement for youth well before they are old enough to vote.
