Can you dedicate 45 minutes a week to make a difference in the life of a young person?

Be a Middle School Mentor matches adult mentors with middle school students to learn about real careers and jobs, to develop big dreams for their future, to understand the importance of doing well in school, and to have another caring adult role model. The program takes place at 18 schools in Pittsburgh (see below) where mentors meet their mentees once/week for 45 minutes to catch up and participate in activities that help students think about who they are, their aspirations, and the steps they can take to get there.

Every session is led by a professional program coordinator from one of four United Way partner agencies: Big Brothers Big Sisters, Communities in Schools, Mt. Ararat Community Activity Center, and the Urban League of Greater Pittsburgh. Mentors simply come to the session as they are while the program coordinators bring activities and speakers to inspire meaningful conversations between mentors and their mentees.

Steps to becoming a mentor:

  1. Fill out an application
  2. Interview with the school’s program coordinator
  3. Complete clearances: Act 33/34 and FBI Fingerprinting (instructions will be sent in an automatic reply after submitting online application)
  4. Attend a training
