BirdBrain Technologies is offering a Level 1 train-the-trainer workshop for the absolute beginner who wants to begin offering professional development with the Hummingbird. In this workshop you will learn to design, program, and build a robot with the Hummingbird robotics kit in Snap! and Scratch using a Chromebook or Laptop and the BirdBlox App for iOs devices. Learn to coach 3rd-12th grade teachers to integrate robotics across their curriculum and align Hummingbird projects to standards. Receive access to workshop outlines, standards alignment documents and more.
Background | The Hummingbird Robotics Kit is a spin-off product of Carnegie Mellon’s CREATE lab. Hummingbird is designed to enable engineering and robotics activities for ages 13 and up (8 with adult supervision) that involve the making of robots, kinetic sculptures, and animatronics built out of a combination of kit parts and crafting materials.
Combined with very easy-to-use software environments like Scratch, Snap!, the CREATE Lab Visual Programmer, and Ardublock, Hummingbird provides a great way to introduce kids to robotics and engineering with construction materials that they are already familiar with. At the same time, Hummingbird continues to provide new challenges by allowing programming in the Arduino environment, Python, Java, and Processing, and by supporting Raspberry Pi.
Skill Level | Beginner (no previous knowledge expected or needed)
Cost | Free
A limited number of seats are available for this workshop. As a “train-the-trainer” session, this workshop will focus on providing participants with the skills and resources needed for them to coach fellow teachers in integrating the hummingbird robotics kits into their instruction. As such, participants will be requested to provide coaching and/or professional learning opportunities pertaining to the Hummingbird to 5 or more colleagues at their respective school throughout the remaining school year.
